layout tips
Use the design of a magazine as an inspiration for your next layout. They can provide pages and pages of ideas on how to place photos, journalling and headings to achieve a well-balanced result.
When working on a double-page layout, attach the two sides together temporarily and work on it as one large page. This can help the layout flow better and stop it from looking like two single layouts sitting next to each other.
You don't need to fill up every space on a page. It is best to keep pages simple. Your photos should not be overwhelmed by the embellishments.
Matting is a great way to highlight a photo and to add colour to the page. It can also bring out the colours in the photo.
When matting your photos select colours that complement your photo. Solid colours usually look best.
Double or even triple matting is a good way to give your focal point more prominence.
For an interesting but subtle effect, combine two different patterned papers of similar colouring and separate them with stitching or plain card stock.
Keep your design in line with your words, eg, create a "fun" mood with "fun" page elements.
Try inking or painting the edges of all or some of the papers and card-stock. It creates a nice definition between all of the items.
